The holidays are especially meaningful for the Rhodes family this year. Mr. Tabu Rhodes started his path to homeownership with Habitat Forsyth on December 19, 2017 and this year, he and his family will celebrate their first Christmas in their new home. Tabu is a single dad who simply wanted a safer home in which to raise his two boys.
On top of being a single dad and going to school to study about Autism, Tabu has worked full-time with individuals with disabilities for four years. Tabu did not let all of these commitments stop him from earning his sweat equity hours; he brought his buddy, Cody, with him to volunteer in the Winston-Salem ReStore. “They were so helpful that after they’d been there just a couple of weeks, they were like staff members,” said Dwayne Thompson, director of the ReStores. They both plan to continue volunteering even though Tabu is no longer in need of volunteer hours.
At a recent Habitat staff meeting, Tabu proudly showed a cell phone video of how he’s furnishing his home so far — mainly with items he has purchased from the Habitat ReStore. “I appreciate everyone at Habitat, and everyone who helped me through this process,” he said. “It has been a really good experience.”
