VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Whether assisting in the office, working at the building sites or helping with the planning of Habitat’s annual Birdfest event, there are many opportunities for willing volunteers of all ages!

For more details about any of these opportunities, fill out the online form and click submit or call Sherry Flynn, Director of Volunteer Services, at 765-8854, ext. 118; e-mail: sherry.flynn@habitatforsyth.org.

CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERS

Construction volunteers (individuals and groups) are always needed. While many volunteers participate during a scheduled building blitz in which houses are started, much work remains to be done after the large groups of volunteers leave. We particularly need volunteers who can work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to complete the labor on the houses.

  • Must be at least 16 years old; 16- and 17-year-olds can participate in a limited capacity on the building sites.
  • Those under 16 can participate in landscaping, site clean-up and other tasks.
  • Please fill out and submit the volunteer form. You will be asked to sign a release of liability waiver before you begin working on the site.

YOUTH UNITED

YOUTH United Volunteers range from ages 5 to 25. They carry out many activities to support the building of a YOUTH United home each year, including raising money through efforts as diverse as Nickels for Nails; asking restaurants to donate a percentage of proceeds from a "Habitat for Humanity" day; and planning "Battle of the Bands" competitions. The youth themselves plan and execute fundraisers each year, then a team of youth ages 16 to 25 actually builds the house. Since the YOUTH United program was founded in Forsyth County in 2003, it has raised more than $168,000 for building homes.

WOMEN BUILD

Women Build Project Volunteers work on an all-woman team to build a Habitat home each year. The Women Build Project is a great way to learn new skills and make new friends while making a difference in the lives of a deserving family. No skills are necessary, and there are many ways to get involved:

  • Helping with construction (hammering, sawing, drilling, etc.)
  • Being a “gopher,” fetching and carrying supplies, tools, etc.
  • Helping with site pick-up
  • Helping with volunteer recruitment
  • Helping with the home dedication
  • Making lunch for volunteers at the work site
  • Making a donation to the Women Build Project.

CORNERSTONE LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The Cornerstone Volunteer Leadership Program gives volunteers additional training so that they can serve in key leadership roles. This allows us to accomplish our goals of building more houses, of higher quality, more quickly. As we build more homes each year, it is likely that we will be active at multiple sites at the same time. Cornerstone volunteers will be the additional arms and legs that enable the Habitat staff to effectively manage ongoing construction.

  • Cornerstone volunteers receive in-depth training beyond the skills necessary for our regular volunteers.
  • Your commitment can be as small or great as you would like. Emphasis will be placed on Saturday work, but Cornerstone leaders are very much needed on weekdays as well.

BIRDFEST VOLUNTEERS

Birdfest volunteers help Habitat staff with this annual community awareness and fundraising event held each year in early May. Artists and other community members create and donate birdhouses and pieces of art for the home and garden. The items are sold over three days and the weekend culminates with a reception and auction on Saturday evening. Birdfest is attended by about 1,500 community members and generates enough revenue each year to build a Habitat home.

Volunteers are needed for activities including, but not limited to:

  • Serving on one of more than 15 committees that plan and execute the event
  • Building “blank” birdhouses that will be painted by others
  • Generating event publicity
  • Securing event sponsors
  • Planning/implementing the annual auction
  • Recruiting artists
  • Checking in and selling donated artwork.
